A Mediterranean Pool Garden

Portland, Oregon

The space between the 1920s Mediterranean-style house and garage provided a wonderful opportunity to create an enclosed courtyard garden in keeping with the style of the house.  The cool tile floors and thick masonry walls of the house are carried out into the garden, and the boundaries between house and garden are blurred.  At the heart of the courtyard sit the swimming pool and spa, flanked by a terrace for lounging in the sun or dining with guests.  The terrace and pool surround are paved in warm-colored slate with panels of brick framed by bands of mosaic tile and bluestone.  A tile-roofed arcade, custom wrought-iron fencing and gates, and a low stucco wall complete the enclosure begun by the house and garage.  Small pockets of planting at the corners and vines climbing the fence provide softness and color.

Adjacent to the courtyard, a lush panel of lawn is framed by perennial beds featuring a rich blend of textures and colors.  A smaller circular lawn sits at the west end of the main lawn, at the foot of a small bedroom terrace.  Bluestone and mosaic tile frame the panel of herringbone brick on the terrace.  The view from the bedroom's glass doors ends at a small stone bench at the edge of the circular lawn.  A path of crushed stone extends from the arcade at the east side of the main lawn, terminating at a sculptural urn atop a high pedestal.
