A Pool Garden

Portland, Oregon

For their approximately 40' x 40' backyard, the clients asked for a swimming pool, spa, terrace, shower, and fireplace. They wanted the design to incorporate lightness and humor with programmatic elements. The result is an architectural garden which is classical in its major layout but innovative and whimsical in its detail. Three bronze frogs are perched atop a wall spouting water from the spa level of the pool. Instead of a fireplace, four iron braziers are arranged around the elliptical pool on low piers. Custom wrought iron rings, complete with frog feet, support the braziers.

The terrace is made of brick bands in a bright palette of colors with bluestone infill. The terrace spaces are marked with piers of stacked bluestone with a brick cap. The fence is constructed of ipé hardwood boards with alternating bars of aluminum in a design recalling the furniture selected for the garden. A shower back-splash of green glass tile, also used in the pool and spa, stands in front of the fence providing a surface for a refinished antique shower. The colors of the hard materials and the plants imbue this garden with a bright lushness perfect for summer pool parties.
