A House on the Charles

Dover, Massachusetts

A courtyard wrapped on three sides by the house results in a space offering sheltered areas for terraces, walkways and a multi-leveled fountain.  The fountain starts in a pool on the first level, drops over a lip into a serpentine runnel which leads into a pool on the third level.  The runnel and pools are framed by plantings of birch trees, a large Japanese maple, thyme, Irish moss, small irises and other aquatic plants.  Terraces also define the space.  The hardscape materials integrate lilac bluestone, bluestone, limestone, and fieldstone to give the ground plane visual impact and interest.  The terraces are linked by walkways that lead through the space and up to the main French doors.  A large lawn sweeps out from the terraces to the woods beyond.
