A Contemporary Suburban Ranch Portland, Oregon For this project, the clients requested something in keeping with the contemporary remodel of their suburban ranch home. The new garden is a boldly geometric twist on the 1950's suburban front yard, traditionally dominated by lawn and low plantings. Here three rectangular planes of lawn are connected by rows of square concrete step stones and gently sloping banks of groundcover. The step stone paths lead guests through the garden and to the front door from both the street and the driveway. Views from the dining room windows fall on intersecting rectangles of lawn and low shrubs with a backdrop of birch trees and tall ornamental grasses. Four paperbark maples with brilliant copper-colored bark flank the circular terrace outside the front entry. The limited plant palette features dramatic contrasts in color and texture.
