A Northwest Contemporary Garden

Seattle, Washington

This garden is a reflection and an extension of the materials and geometry of the clean, contemporary house.  A curved concrete driveway leads to an entry courtyard paved in crunchy gravel and framed by honey locust and sumac trees.  Panels of slate in rusty shades reach from the glass facades out into the landscape at the front and back of the house and echo the deep, warm color of the Cor-ten steel on portions of the house.  In the back garden, a broad plane of lawn is framed by a translucent railing of frosted plexiglass panels.  From the lawn, a staircase of folded steel ripples up the slope to the upper terrace, also paved in rusty slate.  The upper terrace is sheltered by simple and elegant fence of clear cedar planks with chrome and polished aluminum details.  From this terrace, three narrow concrete runnels slide down the slope through a grove of bamboo and extend out into space, pouring water down heavy chains into glazed ceramic pots below.  Planting is kept simple, with a limited palette of species arranged in broad swaths and rows.  Walls, paths, and steps of poured concrete keep the design securely bound to the ground plane and blend with the basement walls of the house.
