A Garden Estate

Dover, Massachusetts

An extensive landscape plan was developed for this six-acre estate in Dover, Massachusetts. The site is surrounded by a woodland of native hardwood species and is adjacent to an expansive meadow.

In the front, a generous entry courtyard of cobblestones and an entry garden with flowering serviceberry and bluestone paving establish formality and welcome visitors. Other outdoor spaces have been established to extend the use of interior spaces out into the garden. For instance, outside the dining room is a kitchen garden filled with culinary herbs and a barbeque terrace for entertaining. A bluestone fountain terrace and terraced lawn provide areas for more passive enjoyment.

A swimming pool is situated between a stone poolhouse (modeled after Irish stone cottages), greenhouse, and the back of the residence. On either side of the pool, small terraces of stone and grass provide space for relaxation.

Plantings near the house were carefully selected to provide bountiful color and textural variation throughout the year. Along the periphery, the garden spaces were integrated into the surrounding woodland.

Further development, in future phases, will include a hidden garden, an orchard, a utility/storage building, a small meadow, and a woodland path.
