An Entry Terrace Garden Portland, Oregon This colonial house on a steeply sloping site had a cramped, underused front yard. With the help of brick and stone retaining walls, we opened up the space to create a new and gracious entry to the home while also providing an open and airy terrace for dining, entertaining, or just relaxing. A flight of broad brick steps with wrought-iron rails descends from the street. The garden is sheltered from the street by a tall privet hedge and the existing Japanese maples. The terrace is framed by a low boxwood hedge behind a band of groundcover. Planting beds of perennials and shrubs in shades of burgundy, chartreuse, and white add additional texture and color. From the circle of brick that marks the intersection of the terrace and entry path, a secondary path leads to the side door through an arbor-topped garden structure painted to match the trim on the house. The structure not only provides storage for garden necessities, but acts as a focal point of the garden and screens the views to the neighbor's driveway. |
