Design Approach

Samuel H. Williamson Associates (SHWA) have been designing notable and meticulously-detailed landscapes since 1991. Our projects reflect a diversity of styles, influences, and responses to climatic and topographic situations. Each site and design is considered with regard to its individual opportunities and architectural context and history. The design process of SHWA is guided by the overarching belief that garden spaces should gracefully combine beauty, comfort, and utility.

Our approach to design has given SHWA the opportunity to create beautiful landscapes for residential, commercial, and institutional sites and clients.  Our services have included master plans, schematic designs, planting plans, construction documents, and construction supervision. Always our process involves close communication  with clients and contractors.

See several projects and examples of our work on the Portfolio page.

Staff Profiles

Samuel H. Williamson, ASLA, CLARB:                                                          email: samw@shwa.net

Sam grew up in Portland, Oregon and earned his landscape architecture degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Design.  After graduating, Sam worked for two of the country's most prominent contemporary landscape architects as well as with a more traditional landscape architect.  These professional poles formed a range from which Sam draws his own design vision stating that he hopes his most traditional designs have the freshness of the new within them and that his most contemporary designs express a knowledge of history and garden tradition.

Sam opened his own firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1991 and while we still maintain a presence there, our main office has been in Portland, Oregon  since 1997.

Kailla Platt:                                                                                                   email: kaillap@shwa.net

Kailla, a native of Oregon, received her undergraduate degree in fine arts from Scripps College in Claremont, California.  Environmental issues and a life long love of horticulture led her to then pursue a landscape architecture degree from the University of Oregon.  Kailla has been with SHWA since 1999.

Kailla's interest and experience with plant material allows her to conceive of plantings with a greater diversity and complexity than often found in designs done by landscape architects. Her ability to make ideas clear and understandable to people with varying degrees of design fluency makes Kailla an effective and valuable project manager.

Joel W. Port:                                                                                               email: joelport@shwa.net

Joel received his bachelor's degree in landscape architecture at Washington State University.  The final two years of his schooling were spent at WSU's Interdisciplinary Design Institute where he focused his studies on ecological landscape design.

Joel has been working as a designer with SHWA since 2001.  He promoted the use of AutoCAD technology and it has since become an indispensable tool for the practice.  Joel's experience with project management, construction detailing, gardening and landscape maintenance make him an integral member of our design team.  Joel also created and manages SHWA's website.

Courtney A. Skybak:                                                                                  email: courtney@shwa.net

Courtney grew up in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Montana, and came to the Pacific Northwest to attend Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She received a Bachelor of Arts in studio art from Willamette in 2000, where in addition to art her studies had included biology, literature, and writing. Courtney then earned a Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota in 2004. Her graduate studies focused on the intersection of ecological and artful design. After graduation she returned to Oregon and has been with SHWA since the beginning of 2005.

Courtney has had a lifelong interest in plants, a fascination with the natural world, and a love of the outdoors, as well as an attraction to objects that gracefully combine beauty and utility. She is perpetually engaged in a number of creative pursuits, including writing, painting, gardening, and crafts, all which inform her design work at SHWA.
